HERMES 2000
1957 • Warm Gray & Seafoam • Swiss-Made • Original Emerald Case
----------------------------------------
THE MACHINE
There is something quietly architectural about the Hermes 2000. Its broad gray shell, sculpted ribbon covers, pale seafoam controls, and substantial Swiss mechanism give it a composed presence that feels both purposeful and beautifully resolved. It predates the more famous Hermes 3000, yet already contains much of the precision, refinement, and visual confidence that would come to define the marque.
Serial number 2221537 places this example in 1957, during the mature years of Hermes 2000 production. Finished in textured warm gray with seafoam-green keytops, spacebar, and platen knobs, the machine is restrained without feeling austere. Its original deep emerald carrying case completes an especially handsome mid-century Swiss ensemble.
----------------------------------------
BENCH NOTES
This machine has been mechanically evaluated and tested here at The Typewriter Mechanic. The principal writing, carriage, paper-handling, margin, and ribbon functions were operating properly at the time of listing. A new ribbon is included with the machine.
The platen remains fairly supple for its age, though still firm. It feeds paper properly and offers a more forgiving sound and feel than many surviving machines from this period, but it should not be mistaken for newly recovered rubber.
----------------------------------------
TYPING FEEL
This Hermes 2000 has a poised, deliberate touch: smooth through the stroke, substantial beneath the fingers, and responsive without becoming nervous. It is not a feather-light portable. Instead, it offers the controlled, mechanically refined rhythm for which larger Swiss Hermes machines are admired.
The machine carries a compact, finely proportioned typeface that produces a tidy, composed page well suited to correspondence, journaling, and longer-form writing.
----------------------------------------
CONDITION
This machine presents beautifully while retaining honest evidence of its age and working life. The textured gray finish shows slight mottling and age-related variation, scattered spotting, small paint flecks and chips, minor edge wear, and a few small areas of surface rust. Portions of the chrome trim show light spotting and age wear, while faint marks and discoloration are visible around the rear decals.
These imperfections are visible in the photographs and have not been concealed or cosmetically overworked. They give the machine a gently weathered, original appearance rather than the look of a refinished example.
The seafoam keytops remain glossy and attractive, with clear legends and only light signs of use. Both platen knobs are present, the ribbon covers sit properly, and no major exterior components appear to be missing. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of the condition description.
----------------------------------------
INCLUDED
Included with the sale are the Hermes 2000 typewriter, its original emerald-green carrying case, and a new ribbon.
The case is a significant part of the set. Its pebbled exterior retains rich color, and the interior includes storage pockets for paper, a manual, cleaning materials, or small accessories. The handle remains secure and usable, the front latch closes properly, and the machine seats securely inside.
The metal hardware shows visible oxidation and age patina, while the exterior carries expected scuffs and small marks from decades of storage and transport.
----------------------------------------
WHO IT'S FOR
This Hermes 2000 is especially well suited to a writer seeking a substantial daily machine, a Hermes collector interested in the models that preceded the celebrated 3000, or anyone drawn to mid-century industrial design that remains thoroughly functional. It has the presence of a serious writing instrument and the composure to reward long sessions at the keyboard.

----------------------------------------
Please read before purchase: This is a vintage mechanical typewriter, carefully tested and described according to its condition before shipment. It will be packed with serious care and fully insured. Because these machines are often 50–100 years old, minor adjustment may occasionally be needed after transit, even when properly packed. Slight alignment variance, ribbon behavior, or small mechanical quirks can be part of vintage typewriter ownership. Please review the photos and condition notes closely, and feel free to ask questions before purchase.
