This Remington Rand De Luxe Model 5 has the look of a machine that has spent its life doing the plain work of writing... black body, glass-ring keys, worn case, practical hardware, and not much interest in being decorative about it.
It is a compact American portable from Remington’s sturdy mid-century line from the late 1930s to 1940s, with final dating pending serial confirmation. It has the attractive low front profile of the De Luxe 5 family, a crinkle/satin black finish, Remington Rand branding on the paper table, and the “Self Starter” key for tab movement. It is not a dainty ultraportable. It is a real writing machine scaled down for a desk, table, or case.
This example has been cleaned and tested with my usual light touch. I do not deep-detail every internal corner when a machine is already behaving well, and this one still shows normal dust, age, and use in the keyboard and segment area. The goal here was not to make it look new. The goal was to make sure it was checked, usable, and honestly described.
All known functions were tested at the bench before listing, including the letter keys, number keys, spacebar, backspace, shift, shift lock, carriage return, line spacing, paper feed, margins, margin release, bell, ribbon advance, ribbon reverse, ribbon selector, touch control, and the Self Starter/tab function.
The typing feel is very Remington: firm, direct, and mechanical, with a shorter portable rhythm and a satisfying snap when the typebars are moving cleanly. It does not have the floaty softness of a later European portable. It feels more like a small tool than a writing appliance. Best fit is for letters, journaling, occasional writing, or a buyer who wants a handsome black portable with real use left in it and visible age honestly left intact.
Cosmetically, the typewriter presents well without pretending to be pristine. The black finish has a nice period texture with small marks, rubs, and ordinary age wear. The glass-ring keys look good and give the machine much of its charm. Metal parts show normal dulling and brightwork wear. There is visible dust/residue in the deeper areas around the key levers and type basket, as shown in the photos.
The case is included with its key, and the case has lived a life. The exterior shows scuffs, rubbed edges, corner wear, and surface marks. The handle is present, with visible wrapping/string near one side. The latch is present. The inside of the case shows age and wear from use. I would call the case functional and character-rich rather than handsome. Please study the case photos closely.
