The Machine
There are plenty of Studio 45s still around. Finding one that still feels like it belongs to its original owner is another matter.
Built at Olivetti's Barcelona, Spain plant, this Studio 45 comes with its original fitted carrying case and an unusually complete collection of factory paperwork tucked neatly into the case compartments. Together they make the machine feel less like a typewriter rescued from a shelf and more like a complete Olivetti writing kit that somehow stayed together for half a century.
Introduced in 1967 and designed by Ettore Sottsass with Hans von Klier, the Studio 45 occupies a wonderful middle ground within the Olivetti family. It offers more substance than the featherweight Lettera series without the sheer bulk of a full office machine, wrapped in the crisp architectural styling that made Olivetti one of the twentieth century's great industrial design houses. This Barcelona-built example likely dates to the late 1960s or early 1970s, with exact production pending serial confirmation.
Bench Notes
This Studio 45 has been cleaned, inspected, and tested. Its principal functions were operating properly before shipment, and it will receive a final inspection before leaving the bench.
A ribbon is installed and included with the machine.
Typing Feel
The Studio 45 has a firm, deliberate action that feels every bit as thoughtfully engineered as its exterior. It carries more weight and stability than a Lettera while remaining comfortably portable in its fitted case. The controlled stroke and steady rhythm make it particularly satisfying for drafts, correspondence, journals, and anyone who prefers a portable with a little more authority beneath the fingertips.
Condition
Cosmetically, this Studio 45 presents well with honest vintage wear. The gray-taupe body shows scattered scuffs, light discoloration, small marks, and signs of use visible on close inspection. The black keys exhibit some surface wear and scratching but retain crisp, attractive legends, while the signature red tab key provides the splash of color that Olivetti always seemed to know exactly where to place.
Some dust and age remain visible around the keybasket and inner workings, and the exposed metal surfaces show the expected signs of decades of careful use. The platen and feed rollers handle paper well, though the rubber should be expected to feel firm rather than newly recovered.
The original fitted hard case is included and remains one of this machine's nicest features. It shows ordinary scuffs, marks, grime, and storage wear, but still secures the machine properly and includes its original storage compartments for the accompanying paperwork.
