ROYAL FUTURA 600

1962 • Powder Blue Finish • Original Carrying Case

THE MACHINE

This 1962 Royal Futura 600 looks as though someone took the practical American portable typewriter and gave it a little mid-century optimism. Its powder-blue body, ivory keys, bright red controls, and sculpted front grille make it unusually cheerful without becoming a novelty. It has enough personality to brighten a desk while remaining every bit the capable working typewriter Royal intended.

The Futura 600 belongs to Royal's early-1960s generation of modernized portables, pairing the company's dependable mechanics with a lighter, more streamlined body. Features include Royal's Magic Margin system, a tabulator, touch control, ribbon color selector, and the thoughtful conveniences that made these machines so approachable for everyday writers.

BENCH NOTES

This machine has been cleaned to the point of functionality, given a general mechanical inspection, and tested here at The Typewriter Mechanic. The principal writing and carriage functions were operating properly at the time of listing. A new ribbon will be included.

TYPING FEEL

The typing action strikes a pleasing balance between comfort and precision. There is a little cushioning beneath each keypress, so it never feels brittle or punishing, while contact at the page remains firm, positive, and satisfyingly clicky. It has the reassuring mechanical feedback Royal is known for without demanding an especially heavy touch.

The platen still retains some resilience and is not completely hardened. Paper feeds properly, and the remaining softness gives the machine a more forgiving sound and feel than many untreated typewriters of this era. As expected of a 1962 machine, however, it should not be mistaken for newly resurfaced rubber.

CONDITION

Cosmetically, this is an especially appealing example. The powder-blue finish remains glossy and even, the ivory keytops are bright, and the red Royal badge and controls provide wonderful visual contrast. There are small marks, minor age-related wear, and the expected traces of decades of use, but nothing that distracts from its remarkably fresh overall presentation. Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.

INCLUDED

Included with the sale are the typewriter, its original hard carrying case, and a new ribbon.

The original case features a handsome blue interior that complements the machine beautifully. The textured tan exterior shows more honest age, including scuffs, staining, darkened areas, and general storage wear. The handle and latches function properly, and the machine seats securely inside for transport.

WHO IT'S FOR

This Royal is an excellent choice for someone looking for a dependable everyday writer with unmistakable mid-century styling. It is equally at home writing letters and journals as it is adding a welcome splash of color to a bookshelf or writing desk.

----------------------------------------

Please read before purchase: This is a vintage mechanical typewriter, carefully tested and described according to its condition before shipment. It will be packed with serious care and fully insured. Because these machines are often 50–100 years old, minor adjustment may occasionally be needed after transit, even when properly packed. Slight alignment variance, ribbon behavior, or small mechanical quirks can be part of vintage typewriter ownership. Please review the photos and condition notes closely, and feel free to ask questions before purchase.
