THE MACHINE
The Olympia SM7 De Luxe represents a moment when the portable typewriter had largely finished evolving. There is very little here that feels experimental or unfinished. Every control falls naturally to hand, every movement has purpose, and the machine possesses the quiet confidence of something designed by engineers who already knew exactly what worked.
Built in West Germany during the early 1960s, the SM7 belongs to the celebrated Olympia SM family, but occupies a particularly interesting place within it. Produced during the relatively brief carriage-shifted generation before Olympia adopted basket shift, it combines the robust character of the earlier machines with the refinements that made the later SM series so enduring.
Finished in cream with a textured taupe front panel and muted green controls, this example wears one of Olympia's most elegant color combinations. Bright chrome accents and restrained styling give it an understated sophistication that feels every bit as appropriate on a modern writing desk as it did sixty years ago.
BENCH RECORD
This machine has been tested at the bench, where its principal typing functions were operating properly before listing.
As with every vintage mechanical typewriter, it is described according to its condition during inspection rather than with the promise that every adjustment will remain precisely unchanged after modern parcel shipping.
TYPING IMPRESSION
The keyboard has the composed, deliberate feel that has long drawn writers to Olympia portables. The action is responsive without feeling hurried, encouraging an easy rhythm whether you're writing a letter or settling into a longer session at the desk.
Fitted with Olympia's standard 97 Pica typeface, this machine produces a clear, highly readable page that remains one of the most practical choices for everyday writing. It is not an exotic type style, but its reputation has been earned through decades of dependable use.
CONDITION
This is a particularly attractive original example. The cream finish retains an appealing sheen, the textured taupe front panel contrasts beautifully with the bright Olympia script, and the muted green shift keys and platen knobs provide just enough color to distinguish it from more familiar SM7s.
Scattered signs of honest age and careful ownership remain, including minor cosmetic marks consistent with decades of use, but nothing that meaningfully detracts from the overall presentation. Rather than appearing restored or heavily polished, it feels like a well-preserved survivor. Please review the photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.

----------------------------------------
Please read before purchase: This is a vintage mechanical typewriter, carefully tested and described according to its condition before shipment. It will be packed with serious care and fully insured. Because these machines are often 50–100 years old, minor adjustment may occasionally be needed after transit, even when properly packed. Slight alignment variance, ribbon behavior, or small mechanical quirks can be part of vintage typewriter ownership. Please review the photos and condition notes closely, and feel free to ask questions before purchase.
