Here is a substantial American portable from the late 1950s, finished in warm gray with blue-green keys, chrome accents, and Remington’s wonderful “Miracle Tab” branding across the carriage. It has the rounded, heavy, slightly overbuilt confidence of the era: not quite an office standard, not quite a light travel machine, but a serious writing machine made for desks, letters, schoolwork, home offices, and long pages.
The Remington Quiet-Riter was made in the United States. The serial number (see photos) places it in the 1958 production range based on available Remington Quiet-Riter serial records. This particular Quiet-Riter was one of Remington’s higher-featured 1950s portables, with a broad carriage, tabulator, margin release, ribbon color selector, line spacing control, and Remington’s large enclosed body design intended to reduce typing noise. It is technically portable, but it is best understood as a sturdy desktop portable rather than a light lap or travel machine.
This machine has been cleaned, tested, and prepared for sale as a usable vintage writing machine. The keys, spacebar, backspace, shift, shift lock, tabulator, margin release, carriage return, line spacing, paper feed, ribbon advance, ribbon selector, and carriage movement have been checked unless otherwise noted here. A new ribbon is included, black by default unless the buyer requests red-and-black or blue before shipment.
The typing feel is broad, confident, and dampened compared with many smaller portables. It has a slightly cushioned Remington feel, with a full key stroke and a more settled rhythm than a snappy ultraportable. Cosmetically, this machine presents with honest vintage wear. The gray body has scuffs, small marks, finish wear, and age spotting visible in the photos.
